Monday:
Travelers from North America leave for Iceland on an overnight flight with an early morning arrival at Keflavik Airport in Iceland.
Tuesday:
Welcome to Iceland!
The Flybus shuttle will bring you from the airport into Reykjavik and drop you at your hotel. You’ll have the day to enjoy Iceland’s capital, visit museums, shops, the big outdoor swimming pool nearby and some of the many fine coffee houses, and restaurants. Lunch and dinner are on your own. You’ll have the next 2 nights in Reykjavik to rest up and recover from your short night sleep on the flight and as a base for some sightseeing..
Wednesday:
Reykjavik Sightseeing - Reykjanes Peninsula - Blue Lagoon
You can start your day with a Reykjavik sightseeing tour to the city center, the harbor, and the Pearl. Then take in the Reykjanes Peninsula, a geothermal field with hot springs, steaming vents, mud pots, volcanic vents and an old explosion crater filled with vivid green water. You’ll see large bird cliffs and black sand beaches and visit the famous Blue Lagoon, (bathing fee not included), set in the middle of the black lava field.
Thursday:
Geysers - Gullfoss Waterfall - Thingvellir UNESCO heritage site
You’ll drive through volcanic landscape with impressive views and geothermal fields where plumes of steam rise to the sky on the way to Thingvellir National Park. This is an ancient site of the original parliament with a unique combination of geological activity. You can down the rift valley caused by the separating North-America and Eurasian tectonic plates. Then head to the famous Geysir hot spring area and view boiling mud pools and one of the most active geysers in the area, Strokkur, spouting up to 30 meters. Continue to Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe. You’ll visit a horse breeding farm with a geothermally heated greenhouse - where you can learn about the Icelandic horse and its special qualities. You’ll spend the next two nights in the Selfoss area.
Friday:
Thjorsadalur - Mt. Hekla - Landmannalaugar
You’ll visit Þjórsárdalur the valley of the Saga Age farms, many of which were buried in the 1104 eruption in Mt. Hekla, Iceland´s most famous volcano. You’ll see the ruins of the ancient farm Stöng buried by ashes from that eruption. This valley is known for its extensive birch woods, and views of the dramatic scenery and untouched wilderness of the highlands. Then you’ll spend a bit of time in Landmannalaugar, a range of colorful rhyolite mountains and geothermal springs. Bring your bathing suit so you can take a soak in the very warm natural pool.
Saturday:
Ilulissat, a UNESCO heritage site
You’ll leave Reykjavik this morning on a flight to Ilulissat where you’ll be met upon arrival. This town is in a beautiful location at the mouth of a long ice fjord, filled with enormous icebergs from the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere. After hotel check in, you’ll have a guided tour of the town, with it’s modern life, above the Arctic Circle. You’ll also see some traditional Inuit culture when you meet a hunter who will show you his sled dogs, and talk about their role in Greenlandic life.
Sunday:
Boat tour to Eqi Glacier
Very few places in the world are as dramatic as the Eqi glacier, which is coming out in a fjord north of Ilulissat. You’ll sail to the edge of the glacier’s frontline rising 80-90 meters above the surface of the sea. While enjoying lunch on board the boat, you may see big chunks of heavy ice break off the glacier - the sights and sounds of these enormous are very impressive.
Monday:
Old Settlements
The day starts with a hike to the remains of Sermermiut, an old settlement, by the ice fjord. You’ll hear the story about life in Greenland before the Europeans´ arrival, and enjoy incredible views of the icebergs in the fjord. The afternoon is open for activities such as visiting museums in town. Numerous optional excursions are available that can be arranged on spot
