The tour will show you a land unchanged by much of modern life - with stark mountain, enormous icebergs, remote villages, but done in a comfortable style. You’ll stay in the wonderful Hotel Arctic in Illulissat and then embark on the Sarfak Ittuk from Illulissat through Disko Bay to Narsaq in South Greenland - cruising along the west coast on board the Greenland Coastal Steamer in style; accommodated in modern, outside cabins with private facilities. It is a fine way to comprehend the huge size of the world’s biggest island and a fine way to meet the locals using the ship as their local bus.

In South Greenland and Disko Bay you’ll have time to learn about life in the Arctic and to experience Arctic nature and the remains from the Vikings and the early Eskimos.

Why Visit West Greenland?

West Greenland is one of the worlds special places, and most visitors find themselves marveling at sights they had never expected to experience. Between the thousands of working dogs, massive volumes of ice, the history both Inuit and Viking, and the elements of an ancient respected culture, the almost mystical qualities of light found in high latitudes Greenland can show you many things. It’s not a land that is easily traversed and for centuries its inhabitants have been able to travel the coastline as they followed the hunt which fed them. Boats are still the best way to travel. To travel from Ilulissat in the north, to Narsaq in the south allows you to take in a bit of the vast splendor that is Greenland, and a trip through time and space.

Day Tours Available While in Ilulissat
You're in Ilulissat Thursday to Sunday morning on the 11 day tour, and from Saturday afternoon thru Sunday afternoon on the 7 day tour.

The location of Ilulissat is breathtaking - all year round huge icebergs raising hundreds of meters above sea level are stranded at the mouth of the fiord. These icebergs are all products of the mighty and most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere. The Ilulissat Glacier gives birth daily to 20 million tons of ice which also explains why it is included on the World Heritage list. There's a lot to see and do on your own but taking advantage of some guided tours will add a bit of depth to your experiences.Prices may change without prior notice due to specific conditions at the time and place of the excursion. Please note that not all excursions are available at all times. Refer to the tour-program for a list of excursions available on that particular tour.

Prices for local tours are listed in Danish Kronur, (DKK) as that’s the currency used in Greenland. See www.xe.com for latest conversions from $US to DKK. Most tours and purchases can be made by credit card. The indicated prices are per person unless otherwise stated.

The Icebergs of Sermermiut
By bus as far as the road goes. A beautiful walk along the UNESCO designated Ilulissat Ice Fiord to Sermermiut where traces from the 3 old Eskimo cultures still can be seen. Sermermiut is a fertile valley next to the Ice Fiord; here you can enjoy the flowers as well as the fantastic icebergs. 3 hours, DKK 300 including refreshment.

Hunter’s Settlement - Rodebay
By boat to the small settlement Oqaitsut/Rodebay with a local population of about 40 persons totally depending upon fishing and hunting - a quite different world compared to the nearby town of Ilulissat. Guided walk through the village before you enjoy lunch at the old trading station. 6 hours, DKK 1000 including lunch.

Midnight Cruise to the Ice Fiord
The midnight sun and the warm red colors reflecting in the gigantic icebergs is a fantastic sight. Cruise between the icebergs and enjoy a late Martini on “the real rocks”! Season for midnight sun is approx. 22May-24July. Outside this season the excursion is operated as an evening cruise with the beautiful sunset reflecting over the icebergs. 3 hours, DKK 500

Helicopter to the Ice Cap
During your stay in Ilulissat the guide can usually arrange an excursion by helicopter - including a ground stop where you can leave the helicopter !As a new service you can now pre-book the helicopter excursion in Ilulissat. During the flight you’ll cruise in low altitude over the Ilulissat Ice Fiord which is now on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Operation is dependent on the weather and helicopter capacity. 30min. flying time + ground stop DKK 2400, 55min. flying time + ground stop DKK 2850

Home Visit
Visit a Greenland home, enjoy the “Coffee-Mik” (a cup of coffee which by tradition is served to all visitors) and learn about Greenland and its population.2 hours, DKK 175

Equip - The Calving Glacier
Eqip glacier is the only glacier in the Ilulissat area where you can often experience a glacier calving. You’ll cruise in front of the 5 km wide glacier - enjoying lunch - and hoping for the unique sight of an iceberg “delivery” - so are also a lot of seabirds as they know by experience, that any calving from the glacier will result in a huge meal, when the new iceberg is turning around in the water bringing a lot of sea animals to the surface. 8 hours, DKK 1595 including lunch.

Fishing tour
You’ll sail to a fishing spot of the day, most probably near Bredebugt or at the mouth of the Ilulissat Ice Fiord. While waiting for your catch you’ll have time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. By the end of the day you will hopefully bring home different sorts of fish like cod, halibut, redfish and catfish. 4 hours, DKK 1000

Feeding the huskies
Ilulissat is sledge-area and the approx. 3500 dogs in town are still used for both work and fun every winter. You’ll be invited to join the feeding of a dog team. You can see, feel, touch and most of all hear the howling of 20 hungry dogs. The owner will demonstrate the sledge and the harness and tell about life as a sledge dog in Greenland. Good shoes advised! 1 hour, DKK 150

Whale Safari
You’ll go out into Disko Bay by boat to spot whales. In the summer humpback whales come to the Disko Bay to feed on the capelin, a small herring-like fish. As the humpback whales are protected they are very trusting and can often be enjoyed at close range. However, as this is not a zoo there is of course no guarantee for seeing the whales. 5 hours, DKK 850 including packed lunch

Hotel Arctic
The warm and welcoming four-star Hotel Arctic is set in the dramatic surroundings just outside Ilulissat and 1.5 kilometers from the airport. Most rooms have a magnificent view of the town and the fjord with its impressive icebergs. The hotel has been awarded the Green Key Award in recognition of its environmentally friendly management and has a professional, but relaxed atmosphere The hotel bus shuttles regularly between the hotel and the town.

Sarfuk Ittuk, the coastal boat
You’ll sail on a vessel built for Greenlandic waters, ready to navigate the beautiful ice-filled coast, as it powers through the 700 miles of its route in 72 hours. Part of the Arctic Umiaq Line, the Sarfuk Ittuk is a coastal passenger vessel, with lots of Greenlander’s (and a crew that’s mostly local) a few visitors who see the country as the Greenlanders do. You’ll have an outside cabin with private bath, and breakfast. Meals are available in the restaurant, there’s a lounge, TV room and all the rugged scenery you can stand outside the boat. A great place to chat with Greenlanders, and you can disembark at most stops along the way. Greenland is not a place that’s easily travelled - the Sarfuk Ittuk is a great way to see this special place! Short stops at Sisimiut, Maniitsoq, Nuuk, Paamiut and Qaqortoq.

Ports of Call:
On Sunday the tour continues by boarding the coastal boat and working down from village to village to the southern town of Narsaq. Some of the stops are at odd hours and some are only long enough to drop off a little freight or pick up a bin of frozen fish or shrimp.
